Regarding D. Mason’s May 14 letter supporting an “At Large” voting system: Charter Review Committee recommendations to the City Council in their Nov. 17, 2011 report included: “The Committee recommends to the City Council that the Charter be changed to allow At Large elections” which was the easiest and least costly replacement to the current “At Large by Seat” voting system. Committee recommendations were on the following Council Goal Setting meeting agenda where the voting system issue went no further. This Charter Review Committee was formed under threat of legal action. Once the legal threat passed, back to Council business-as-usual! Incumbents should not run unopposed and should be subject to voter approval for each term – not get a “free pass” for a second term running unopposed. Citizens will be required to lead the change to “At Large” City Council elections – our City Council members have no interest.
